At Natural Spices, we believe that healthier food should never mean compromising on taste. For more than 90 years, we have been developing herbs, spices, seasoning blends, sauces and marinades that help consumers enjoy flavourful meals every day.

From 100% natural seasoning blends without added salt or sugar to innovative sauces with fewer calories, we develop products that respond to changing market demands without compromising on quality or flavour.

As a Dutch manufacturer with our own production facility, we work closely with retailers, foodservice companies, distributors and food brands to develop products that combine great taste, innovation and reliability. Whether supplying our own brands, creating private label solutions or developing bespoke recipes, we create products that meet the needs of both our customers and today's consumers.

Our History

For more than 90 years, Natural Spices has been helping people enjoy better food through herbs, spices, seasoning blends and sauces. What began as a small Dutch trading company has grown into an innovative manufacturer serving retail, foodservice, distributors and private label partners across Europe.

 

Where it all began

Our story started in 1935, when Mr. Wellinghoff founded a company specialising in the trade of herbs and spices.

In 1967, the company was acquired by Mr. H. Schuurman, the miller of Molen de Bloem, and relocated to the iconic windmill on the Haarlemmerweg in Amsterdam. From this characteristic location, the business continued to grow while building a reputation for quality and expertise.

 

A new generation of entrepreneurship

In the late 1990s, former butcher and passionate home cook Yvan Keijlewer joined the company as a sales representative. He quickly developed a passion for the world of herbs and spices and acquired the business a few years later.

As demand increased, the Amsterdam mill became too small, prompting a move to larger premises in Watergang. The foundations were laid for the next stage of the company's growth.

 

From trading company to manufacturer

In 2003, Yvan's son Yvo left his career as a financial consultant in search of work that truly inspired him. While helping his father with the business, he discovered his passion for the food industry and recognised an opportunity to take the company in a new direction.

Rather than remaining purely a trading business, Yvo envisioned Natural Spices becoming a manufacturer with its own production facilities, capable of developing unique products and customised solutions for customers.

After two years of working alongside his father and learning every aspect of the business, Yvo officially joined the company in 2005.

 

Investing in the future

In 2010, father and son faced a defining moment. The company needed to decide whether to continue as it was or invest in additional production capacity for future growth.

Yvo chose to invest. He took over the daily management of the company while Yvan remained closely involved as product developer, contributing his extensive knowledge of recipes and production processes.

The company relocated once again, this time to its current production facility in Mijdrecht, creating the space needed for continued innovation and expansion.

 

Pioneering healthier products

Innovation has always been part of our DNA.

In 2017, a long-standing customer approached us with the challenge of developing a healthier sauce. Thanks to Yvo's interest in healthier nutrition and Yvan's expertise in product development, the team created a recipe that combined great taste with significantly fewer calories.

The result proved to meet a growing market demand and marked the beginning of our journey into healthier sauces.

 

Growing with changing consumer needs

When the COVID-19 pandemic changed the way people cooked and ate, consumers became more adventurous in the kitchen and increasingly looked for products that combined convenience, flavour and healthier ingredients.

Natural Spices responded by expanding its consumer range and continuing to invest in innovative seasoning blends and sauces that deliver exceptional taste without unnecessary compromises.

Today, as a second-generation family business, we combine more than 90 years of craftsmanship with modern product development and in-house production. Together with our dedicated team, we continue to help retailers, food brands, distributors and foodservice partners create products that consumers love.
